2008 me

When times are tough or you're feeling down, what's the one food you can count on to make you feel better?

Food, if eaten in this context, generally makes me feel worse rather than better. Writing makes me feel better.

Alternatives to LJ

hhgg space is big
Should LJ decide to join the Dodos, I'm planning on moving my blogging ass to another site. Problem: which one? I have a couple of accounts floating about, but nothing substantial. So, I ask you, my community of LJers, to give me some input. Plus, I have a permanent account, and I haven't made a poll in a really long damn time. I better get my money's worth if LJ's being sucked into the toilet.

(Okay, I've had my account for awhile. But still.)

My turning point -- Tennyson

gnauga please!
Up until now, I've been watching the whole Blagojevich "scandal" with thinly veiled amusement. Today, after hearing him quote from Tennyson's "Ulysses," I can now say that my opinion of him, whether or not he's guilty, is that he's a dumb jerk.

1) He is NOT a hero, no matter how he paints himself as the savior of the people of Illinois, and quoting that poem, in effect, seems to equate him with the character of Ulysses. Hell nah.

2) He didn't even quote the entire section. It sounded exactly like what Neil read in that tiny scene in Dead Poets Society, which isn't the whole end of the poem. Should I assume from that that Blago simply took the poem from the movie? Okay, I can't make that assumption, but it still pisses me off that he would use the truncated quote.

3) He just doesn't get it. Just.....not. That poem seems so INappropriate to his circumstances that it boggles my mind that he would use it. Just because the last line "...and not to yield," SEEMS so appropriate doesn't mean it is. Dude. Get a clue. It's just like every time some cockknocker takes something out of context, tries to spin a line to make it fit. And here, that he's trying to do it for emotional effect? GRRRAAHHAHHAAHAHAHA*&^$%_()#*$&#$)*&+%$

4) Is quoting poetry (Kipling, Tennyson...who's next?) supposed to make him seem...better? Lots of people know at least some poetry, and that includes criminals -- rapists, murderers, thieves. (Again, not calling Blago a criminal, since he hasn't been tried.) Do people actually swallow that image? "OMG, he quoted a poem, he's so SMART." Jeezus.

I could go on, but I won't. I'm just angry. I'm sure it's stupid to be so, but it just torks me off when I see people abusing poetry, as I feel Blago does.
"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."
